BOUGHT by Metro: Chinese Teachers Create Rolling Balloon Rings in Classroom

On April 2, 2024, in Fujian, a senior high school physics teacher innovatively tackled student stress by introducing a “rolling balloon ring” in the classroom.

This playful educational tool leverages Bernoulli’s principle and Coandă effect: when air is blown from a hairdryer on the side of the balloon loop, the airflow speeds up as it blows towards the curved surface of the balloon, reducing the pressure on the balloon’s surface; whereas on the outer periphery, the airflow is slower, resulting in higher pressure. The hairdryer accelerates the airflow near the balloon, creating a force that causes the balloon loop to rotate, allowing it to float and spin in the air.

The senior high school students in third gradewere captivated by the rolling balloon ring, enjoying the activity immensely and finding a fun method to release their stress amid their studies.
